Create a Powerful Professional Brand

While many standard CVs start by listing career objectives or dry detail, we recommend you do something different – after all, you don’t want to look just like everyone else. Your professional brand is the identity you want to create at work and the impression you want people to get when they work with you, and it gives interviewers an idea of how you connect with their agency’s brand and values, as well as the rest of the team.

Start by developing a strong, clear professional profile that shows your prospective employer who you are and why you’d be a great addition to their real estate team. You want to demonstrate how you add value and how you work.

Create a clear and specific title that encapsulates you professionally and grabs attention, then build on this title by adding detail about your skills, professional values, accomplishments and more.

Choose Facts Over Fluff

Remember, the people in charge of sourcing new hires are likely working through hundreds of resumes a day to find the right person for the job, so don’t get caught up in trying to fill your CV with lengthy, overly descriptive phrasing. Instead, go for short, punchy sentences full of facts. If you can, add numerical statistics to back up your resume, as well as training certificates and other accomplishments.

A good trick to eliminating unnecessary fluff is to format your resume content into groups of bullet point lists, each point being a single sentence. This makes your resume exceptionally easy to read and ensures you – and the reader – can get to the point in as little time as possible.

Show That You Have the Skills for the Job

First, look at the job you are applying for. Is it for property management? A real estate administration position? Or a residential sales position? List out the skills you have but place special emphasis on the ones that are relevant to that particular position, putting them front and centre. If you are new to the world of real estate, think about the skills you have learned in your real estate course and list them (negotiation skills, sales and marketing skills, customer service skills, knowledge of real estate laws specific to that state, etc.). Again, start with the skills relevant to that particular position, then list the others as secondary skills.

Showcase Your People Skills

Building relationships with clients is a key part of working as a real estate agent, and that takes strong people skills. Instead of saying that you’re a people person, back it up with a section filled with activities that require strong people skills. These don’t have to be related to the work of an estate agent – if you participate in any clubs, charities and team activities, put them on the list with a little detail about your role within them.

When looking for a job in the real estate industry, you don’t just want to spam every agency that’s hiring – you want an environment where you will enjoy working, where you’ll thrive and where you’ll get the right start for your career. Take some time to think about the kind of real estate agency you would like to work for, considering the overall company culture as well as the different focus areas in the industry, and research the agencies that are offering positions.

It’s a good idea to apply to multiple positions in order to increase your chances of hiring, but don’t forget to tailor your resume to each application by reading through the position in detail and highlighting the skills and traits you have that position you as the ideal candidate.
