How to unlock your next real estate career move

When the new year rolls around, you can’t help but reassess your goals. Even if you’re not one for new years resolutions, the new year signals a clean slate, a fresh chapter. And when you add two years into a global pandemic, skyrocketing property prices and economic uncertainty into the mix, your real estate career goals can suddenly feel not so significant.

However, when the circumstances are beyond your control, a useful place to start can be to take ownership of the things you can. Your career is yours for the taking! The ‘Great Resignation’ swept the US by storm in 2021, with the monthly resignation rate reaching its highest on record at 3% in September 2021, and it’s predicted to reach Aussie shores in 2022.

So, what can you do to take control of your career in 2022?

  1. Revisit your values

It goes without saying that employees expect more than just a salary from their workplace. With this shift in power, employees have the opportunity to seek out companies that align with their own values. From flexible work arrangements and office perks (who doesn’t love an office dog) to professional development opportunities, employees are taking ownership and seeking out workplaces that reflect their values and meet their needs.

  1. Harness your strengths

Not to sound like a high school career advisor, but in hindsight, they probably were onto something. If you’re someone who thrives on building relationships, explore career paths where relationship management is essential for success. If you are competitive, ambitious, and goal-driven – perhaps property sales is for you. Identify ways to combine your skills and interests and your career (and wellbeing) will reap the benefits.

  1. Research, research, research

Knowledge really is power and with the internet at your fingertips, there’s no shortage of information. Use it to your advantage and explore the multitude of career paths available to you. Depending on your experience and qualifications, there could be reskilling opportunities that you aren’t even aware of.  And your research doesn’t need to be limited to the internet. Talk to people in the industry, attend networking events and learn how others in the real estate industry have shaped their career trajectory.  A little insider knowledge can go a long way.

  1. What brings you joy?

Excuse the cliché but if you’re spending 8+ hours a day doing something, it needs to bring you some level of enjoyment. And no, we’re not falling into the old adage – do something you love and never work a day in your life, we know that’s not always realistic. Whether it’s smashing goals, building relationships or showcasing homes, a career in real estate could be the change you’re looking for.
